Wedding Venue & Location

Sophie and Tom had their ceremony at their family church, St Hildas, Tottington, Bury.

Brides come to me seeking something original and often choose to tweak (either a little or a lot) one of my existing designs, creating a veil which is unique to them. Sophie chose a bespoke variation of the Tabitha veil

The wedding reception was at Rivington Barn, we wanted to create a woodland, whimsical fairytale look, which we did with the beautiful décor, forest green bridesmaids’ dresses and burnt orange ties for the men. We also bought a novelty car which we did up and arrived in style on the day. During the main meal we auctioned the car off, the money we raised went towards my Nanna’s charity which unfortunately a year prior to the wedding my Nanna fell ill and sadly passed with MND disease.

How did the proposal happen?

We had been dating for a year and Tom announced that he was going to propose. With that in mind I thought the proposal was imminent and then in February he took me to Chester to a luxury hotel. This was going to be it!I told all my friends and even my mum that he was going to pop the question and bought a new outfit, had my hair and make up done and I even practised my ‘shocked’ face in the mirror but to my disappointment he didn’t!

After a few months I lost hope thinking it wasn’t going to happen and then we went on our first family holiday abroad to Palma just the three of us. Tom found a spot for us to sit down and enjoy the view it was late Sunday afternoon, the sun just settling. Looking suspicious and a bit nervous he got down on one knee and asked for my hand in marriage – outside the beautiful cathedral in Palma. it was a perfect moment.

Where did you meet?

We met in 2015 after ‘matching’ on Tinder (embarrassing I know ) we met for food at Bem Brazil at the time I was looking for an older more ‘mature’ man so my profile searched only men aged 25 and above. Being the cheeky chap that he is Tom lied about his age and said he was 27 (at the time we was only 22!). Let’s just say it was an interesting conversation during our first date when I asked to see his drivers licence ! I soon fell for his charm and cheeky smile. More importantly he was the best step daddy to our little girl as he has taken her on as his own and loves her dearly.

Any random, quirky or just plain lovely facts about your relationship, engagement or wedding?

We had a big Irish traditional wedding that went on all weekend and we even had another do the night afterwards! We had a fiddle player who came and performed for our guests, a live painter who painted the day, a guitarist and singer during the drinks reception and our own personalised ice cream menu. We had a saxophonist and we even devised a dance which we performed on screen at the wedding. Our best man’s speech was practically Keith Lemon Through the Key hole – he came into our home and filmed as a surprise for all our guests to enjoy a good laugh! The night before the wedding Tom gave me a DVD to watch – featuring my close family and friends and pictures with words of wisdom and advice for married life. The tears started then!

The Veil:
I’ve always liked to think outside the box, always thinking of something different, that’s why I wanted a bespoke veil. I wanted the ‘wow’ factor and when I came across Sash + Veil on instagram I fell madly in love! I knew this is exactly what I wanted. After exchanging messages and receiving samples and ideas with Heather and Carolyn (of Maggie Lyn who made my headpiece) we decided on the most perfect veil. I can honestly say it moved my husband to tears – he said it was the most gorgeous veil he had ever seen.

I have a big airy studio in Colchester, Essex where you can make an appointment to come along and have a chat, see the collection of veils and sashes and have a try-on to see which works best. I have made accessories for brides all over the world including America, Japan, Australia, Sweden, France and Scotland and if you are not close enough to pop in, we can chat via email or Skype. I am always very happy to post out samples and sketches too so you can ensure the colour and fabric is exactly right before I post your veil or sash out to you.
